Looks like this will be a weekly thing

[This whole week has been awful. This whole experience has been awful. Mordecai wants to go straight to his room and deal with his frustrations, but that's not what a mayor does. A mayor takes charge, a mayor fixes what's wrong, a mayor makes things better. Even if he can't do everything on his own, he's has to do something.

Two hours after the end of the trial, the living will find another note slipped underneath their doors.]

There's cookies in the kitchen. The dining room is ready for anyone who needs a quiet place to talk it out. I'll be in the bar if you need a drink, alcoholic or something more appropriate for the underage crowd.

[There's a pile of warm chocolate chip cookies in the kitchen. Two more candles are lit at the memorial - one for the victim, one for the culprit - and Mordecai has left a pile of blankets from the storage room on one of the dining room tables.]

[ Seeing the monsters recoil from the light the way they did has Jean worked into a bit of a frenzy. Not a huge one, but enough that he forgets about politeness and straight up reads Logan's writing over his shoulder for a moment. ]

Is that about a monster from Albion?

[Logan flinches a bit when he hears Jean's voice and he turns to look at the teenager. It takes him a second to recover from the initial shock, but he finally nods.]

...I fought shadow monsters back in Albion. It's been quite some time since then, so I'm trying to get everything I remember down on paper. Whatever is in the pit isn't the same as what I fought before, but... At this point, anything might help.

[ Sorry Logan, rude-ass teenage boy is lacking in manners. Jean looks interested in the mention of shadow monsters, however. ]

It's a good idea. There's nothing like that where I come from, which i think is true for a lot of us.

[ They don't like light, huh? The reminds him of something. ] Katsuki knows how to make explosions. Probably some pretty bright ones, too.

Explosions... I'm certain they'd hate that. Can he make explosions with what we have here?

[We've got a bunch of chemicals for cleaning, can that be used to blow stuff up? Because that sounds like something he wants to watch.]

That's what he said. We were gonna try to get through the door to the courtroom our first week there. [ Obviously, that didn't happen. ]

I doubt the Conductor will appreciate that. Perhaps the door isn't there to keep us out, but rather to keep that in.

[ Jean thinks about that for a moment... and then shudders. ] Ugh, good point. It's a good thing we didn't get through.

I'm not sure if it is confined to the pit or if it can move around the room down there, but either way it may be best to keep an eye out. I doubt it can get past the door though.

[He's pretty sure shadows can't go through walls. Pretty sure.]

If it hasn't so far, it either can't or doesn't want to.

[ ... ]

It seems to respond to the Conductor's mood, though. Do you think it's part of him?

Ah... It did react differently during the previous trial, didn't it...?

[He hadn't even considered that. That's getting written down.]

It might be. I cannot say for certain. The only shadow I encountered that was capable of speech was... much different. It isn't the Conductor or whatever is in the pit.

[And thank god for that.]

Yeah... damnit, I was so focused on Chie I didn't even look at the Conductor this time.

[ In other words, he has no idea if the Conductor acted like the flash hurt him at all. ]

... wonder if we'd get in trouble for holding a lantern up against his podium next time.

...There isn't any rule against it. I doubt he would punish us without a rule in place. We could attempt to illuminate the courtroom better to see if that has any effect on the shadows, but if it's in the pit, I'm not sure it will.

[Who knows how far that thing can see? ...Can it see???]

Yeah... [ Jean looks deeply, deeply thoughtful as he considers Logans words, and then he nods. ] I'm gonna talk to Katsuki. If nothing else, we might find out more about him.

That's a good idea. There's plenty we don't know about the situation.

[Logan pauses for a moment, then carefully sets the pen down.]

I have one request for you, Jean. Should either you or Katsuki hear or see anything strange while you're around that monster... Leave immediately. Do not attempt to fight it.

[ The request catches Jean off guard and he simply stares at Logan for a moment. After a moment, he sighs. There's a smile on his face, but the expression is far more worn out and chagrined than happy or amused. ]

You don't have to ask twice. I don't want to fight monsters from my own world, especially unarmed. [ He realizes how serious Logan's request is, however, so he's quick to add. ] I won't do anything too risky. I promise.

...Thank you.

[There's no way for him to explain just how important this is, but Jean seems to understand.]

We will do everything we can to put a stop to this, but for now we should focus on making plans. The Conductor will most likely have another incentive for us soon.

[And then afterwards we can have another meeting to discuss everything.]

[ Yeah, Jean hasn't forgotten about their incentives. Especially not since last week. ]

He's taking things a lot more personally now. I don't think he's gonna let up on the pressure anytime soon.

No, of course not. We'll have to keep an eye out to see which of us are having difficulties with the incentive this week.

[He doubts there will be any way to prevent a murder, but maybe if they can get anyone terribly upset by the motive to sit down and think rationally...?

It probably won't help.]

[ Jean nods - that honestly sounds like the best idea to him - but he's got something else on his mind already. ]

Hey, Logan. You do the night patrols sometimes, right?

I do, yes. Do you have a question about them?

No, nothing like that. [ Jean waves a hand. ] Just be extra careful about the restricted areas and sleeping rules.

[ Maybe he should have mentioned this sooner, but: ] Last time the Conductor did this, he ended up killing one of the girls for breaking the rules.

Really? That's interesting...

[Breaking the rules results in death, huh? That's what he figured, but that seems a little harsh for sleeping outside of the dorms...]

I'll be careful. I won't break any of the Conductor's rules.

[ It's not like Jean suspected Logan of doing something like that in the first place, but he can't help but feel relieved all the same. ]

Thanks, Logan. I think as long as you're around, everyone can feel a little less uneasy.

[Well if anyone is going to pass out from exhaustion, it's Logan. But he makes sure to be in ~~his~~ Reaver's room before that can happen!!]

[That's actually a huge compliment. Everyone in Albion hates him (for good reason), so uh. Give him a moment.]

I'll continue to do what I can for everyone.

[ It's already, Jean is also bad with compliments ~~when he isn't be self-aggrandizing~~ so he's content to give Logan all the moment he needs. ]

Yeah. Same here. [ Which may just consist of tearing the school apart in search of clues, but someone has to do it. Finally, though, Jean moves to step back. ] I'm gonna go try to find Katsuki. I don't think we've got much time before things get out of hand again.
