They're not as tricky as everyone makes them out to be, honestly.

[Scooting up in her chair again, Rin gets the skirt she was working on back under the machine to just show him what she means directly.]

You just place your spool of thread here [she indicates where hers is now, on top of the very obvious metal rod that sticks up out of all of these] and loop it through these. Then once everything's put together, all you have to do is turn the crank to control the needle.

[Like so! The crank's function is what the foot pedals are used for with modern day machines. And then obviously you just use your free hand to guide the fabric.]
