Well, I'm not really an engineer, so I couldn't tell you exactly how it works... but the basic gist of it is that there are actually certain gases that are lighter than air, and if you fill some kind of container with them, you can make that container float in the air. Airships control lifting off and landing by adjusting how much of that kind of gas there is in the containers versus how much actual air they have to lift.
