at the end of the river, the sundown beams

[Well...that trial was most certainly a thing, now wasn't it.

It's probably a while after the trial that some notes will be going underneath people's doors, written in a nice, clean scrawl--]

For anyone who hasn't gotten anything to eat, there will be food and refreshments provided in the dining room courtesy of Estelle-san and I. Feel free to take as much as you need.

[True to the word, there's plenty of food to go around--potato stew courtesy of Estelle, and curry courtesy of Sayaka. There's coffee and tea out as well, for anyone to drink, and...well, it's more or less an optional thing. After today, some might need it.]

[If their positions were revered Rin's response would likely mirror that as well, so she can't think of anything to say against that common courtesy. She just hums, and will accept her things if they're offered.]

Isn't it late to have your door open? If you're trying to be available for others, you'll probably have better luck in the morning.

[ A forced smile slides on to her face and she hands Rin her clothes. ]

It's...too quiet at night. I just wanted to have some kind of noise.

This building really could use some white noise. Even my house has a grandfather clock.

[There's just too much soundproofing here, sigh. Trying to keep her energy levels up, Rin snaps her fingers.]

You could run the sink faucet? It's all on the Coordinator's dime, so you wouldn't even need to worry about the expense.

Ah... I don't know if running water'd help me sleep any better.

Really? Most people find it soothing... [But she trails off there, as if remembering something.] Oh, drat. Sorry, I forgot you were the one that doesn't like water.

[She does sound genuinely apologetic.]

[ Alex waves a hand and shakes her head, a little awkward but not totally bothered. ]

It's...fine, you know, I didn't expect everyone to memorize everything about everyone, so. Don't worry 'bout it. I know it wasn't like that.

Mm.

[...though that kind of puts things in a new spin. She remembers how Alex just sort of... fell apart at the trial, but assumed that was more to due with the brutal execution itself. No, it probably was, but it was still a stark response. Rin shifts her laundry in her good arm a bit, seeming to consider before asking:]

How are you now?

I'm... I've been better, but...I think we're all kind of like that.

[ She's kind of...dodging anything specific there, but she's honest enough. ]

What about you? After all that.

[She thought Jean was interesting, but...]

I didn't know either of them that well, but I think most of us will need time to process what happened all the same.

[Jean turned out to be a reckless idiot, but he wasn't a bad person, just a paranoid one. And Caren... Caren definitely didn't deserve that. When she thinks back on, Rin is still angry on how sloppy and brutal her execution was.]

It was sick. Doing something like that to her, after it was all a messed up accident. After they're the ones who put us here in the first place.

[ Alex leans against her door frame, one hand balled to a fist. ]

I'm gonna...need to sleep on it. [ >implying she'll be able to sleep

[There's so many questions she has about that, that she wants to brainstorm, but... Rin eyes her balled up fist. Alex doesn't really need that right now.

This might be an important question... Are bubble baths lumped under your water discrimination?

[ Oh. ...Well, that's a surprise. She shakes her head. ...Should probably mention her hair's down right now, for the first time since she's been here, so it smacks against her cheeks. ]

Not if I don't fall asleep in 'em, which...I never do. Why?

[Well, Alex sure is getting Rin's laundry stuffed back in her hands.]

Watch these for me. I'll be right back.

[...and apparently the subject's not even up for debate because Rin is already on her way back out of the dorms, waving one hand back at Alex with a smile that promises surprise.]

Wha- I'm n- hey!

[ Weakly protests, and just. Stands there dumbly, staring after Rin. ...Well, fine this might as well happen. ]

[Sure is. And in about 10 minutes, Rin will return with a container in hand, filled with an odd mixture of things from the kitchen. It has soapy consistency, and smells like vanilla and honey. Knock-knock at the door, whether it's still open or now closed!]

I'm back. [She sounds more tired before, but also in a pleasanter mood.] I've got just the trick for you.

[ Door is indeed still open! Might as well not make anything difficult, Alex is just sitting at her desk, a little spaced out. Rin's return sparks a little more alertness from her. ]

Did...you just make bubble bath stuff? Just 'cause?

[ Honestly she sounds both bemused and impressed. ]

I knew how to do it, so it was never going to take long.

[It was a little hard mostly one-handed, but still simple enough. Rin sets the container down on Alex's desk.]

If you're going to have a hard time sleeping, you either need to tire yourself out or trick your body into relaxing. It's too late to do the former, but a warm, aromatic bath might work.

...Oh.

[ Well...what the heck. What does she do with this? ]

That's... Thanks. That's real sweet, Rin.

[...!

Rin's eyes briefly widen before she glances sharply away, cheeks tinted pink.]

It's just a favor for a favor. I owed you for your help in the hall earlier, so if I can help you get your mind off your rough day, I can consider that debt repaid.

Yeah, sure. [ An almost-smile. ] I, uh- ...back in that...trial, there's no hard feelings on my end. You know?

[ As she'd been one of the people to chide Rin for coming down on Caren and Estelle. ]

[Oh, subject change. Rin looks back to Alex again, seemingly surprised before her features smooth over, and she reaches to brush a lock of hair behind her ear.]

I wouldn't mind if you did. [Or at least that's what she'd tell herself.]

You could hate me, and that would be fine too. So long as we're still able to cooperate with each other, I'll accept any animosity.

[No hard feelings here either, is basically what she's saying, as if it's only practical. She sounds calm.]

[ Pragmatic. ...Seems pretty on par with what she's seen, of her. There's a slight frown, but. ]

Well...I don't, but...alright, then. Just wanted you to know that, clear the air. Especially with [ gestures to the soap ] you know. The...trading of favors.

[By contrast, after a pause, Rin meets Alex's frown with a small smile.]

I know. It was obvious before it was a trade. If you didn't mind that, it's because you're a kind person and not a self-righteous one.

[ She colors a little but shrugs. ]

Oh... We're all just...trying to get through this, so...even if we disagree, it's nothing to hate someone over.

[ A kind person... She guesses, she could be. ]

[Rin can agree with that. And with the bubble bath handed over, she looks about to take her laundry now-- ah, there it is.]

If you want to get through this, you should shut your door too after I leave. It's getting late.

[She could be really annoyed Alex left it open, actually, but mostly she's tired.]
