at the end of the river, the sundown beams

[Well...that trial was most certainly a thing, now wasn't it.

It's probably a while after the trial that some notes will be going underneath people's doors, written in a nice, clean scrawl--]

For anyone who hasn't gotten anything to eat, there will be food and refreshments provided in the dining room courtesy of Estelle-san and I. Feel free to take as much as you need.

Please stay strong, everyone.

♥ Estelle and Sayaka

[True to the word, there's plenty of food to go around--potato stew courtesy of Estelle, and curry courtesy of Sayaka. There's coffee and tea out as well, for anyone to drink, and...well, it's more or less an optional thing. After today, some might need it.]

Guess it is.

[ His response to the first two statements, honestly. What is talking about feelings, we just don't know. ]

Well, we just watched a girl get executed for something that really wasn't her fault. I'll give people some time to bounce back, for a variety of reasons. As for me, what happened just pissed me off, y'know?

[ A lot. But Yuri doesn't want to mope about it, because that's not how he does things, and it helps he is used to seeing some pretty cruel things. With the exception of something like next week's mid-day kill. ]

I understand that feeling, at least. It was an injustice, and one she definitely did not deserve.

[Luca may not have been particularly close to Caren, but he can recognize when a trial is a sham and the results are unfair. That really makes his blood boil too.]

Self-defense is an acceptable defense in any modern country. Why is it not acceptable here?

[ Yuri knows he wasn't close either, but stuff like that is just... yeah. ]

I only imagine because it's the way things are set up here. It helps facilitate this messed up "game" and all.

[ ... ]

She'd even would have had more of a chance back at the capital and things were pretty corrupt over there.

...mmm.

[A sound of agreement there. Luca's world is full of corruption too, but even Caren would have been given a chance, provided that Jean wasn't of a higher caste than her.]

Republic, or empire? For your home country, I mean.

Empire.

[ Come to think of it, Yuri doesn't think he's heard of any country or place being a republic or anything currently, but...he hasn't completely explored his world yet, so. ]

What about yours? Is it a fun place to live?

It is an empire, and it is a total bore. As empires usually are. Stifling rules, a crushing pressure to conform to what the government wants of its people, strict class division, and the like.

...It'd be too much to expect them to be any different elsewhere, huh?

[ Figures it'd be like that in other Empires too. ]

Of course. Traditions might be different, but an empire is always an empire.

[And empires are usually only good for the people at the top.]

Pretty much. It's practically impossible to change that.

[ Probably, Yuri thinks, and he can't help but think of Flynn, who had originally been fighting to change things. He wondered if that was going to work out. ]

Can't help but enjoy imagining the people in charge being knocked on their asses so things don't go how they want, though.

[ Sometimes less imagining and more doing... ]

Yes, that is always a treat to see. It is a shame it doesn't happen more often, though.

Yeah, it really is.

[ ... Don't mind him reminiscing about when he kicked a pair of tax collectors into the river. ]

[That sounds like a good memory.]

You know, this isn't quite what I had in mind when I thought of 'talk to someone to avoid how depressing this place is'.
hesperos: (12)

[personal profile] hesperos 2017-09-23 04:43 am (UTC)(link)
[ Actually, it's not exactly what he hadn't had in mind either. But... ]

Well, we're avoiding talking about how depressing this place is, so I'd say we're doing a good job of that, right?

Avoiding this depressing place by talking about other depressing places? I suppose you are technically correct.

[Which is the best kind of correct.]
