The limits are decided more closely by the mages themselves.
[But yeah, eyes still adjusting here. She can probably make out Elda's shape on the bed now, enough to look directly at her.]
I've never tried it, but depending on the method there might be a way to undo it too. I'm sure studies have been done on it.
