Week 2.

WEEK 2 Two people are dead. Ken Kaneki has been murdered, Reaver has been executed - and perhaps most uncomfortably, the Conductor is proud of you all for adhering to due process. (As always, by which he means that there is a process, and you all are certainly doing it.) Saturday is given to regrouping and sleep; come Sunday morning, the clock chimes the hour at seven o'clock and there are no dead bodies to be found, so it can be assumed that all of you are safe for the time being. That said, you'll be feeling a little groggy when you wake up; it seems you've regained something that you didn't realize you'd lost... However, once you've shaken that off, there are new things to be looked at; the previously closed-off area near the kitchen has been unlocked, and there's a new floor to be explored - consider it your reward for a job well done. [He barely hesitates.]

If it belonged to Reaver, maybe you should hold onto it.

I can't say he'd appreciate me being the one to have it.

[At.... least he's honest?!]

[decrees]

[...Well, you're not wrong...]

I'll keep it then. Thank you.

[His hands are shaking and it's impossible to hide it, but Logan's expression and voice remain composed.]

...How are you doing?

[It's an awkward question, but he's... trying. He isn't sure if he wants to talk about anything that's been happening in his head, so maybe it'll be better to focus on someone else for awhile.]

[perpend]

Don't mention it.

[He doesn't answer right away, because to tell the truth, he really doesn't know himself.]

I've... been holding up, I suppose.

[He'd had a bizarre stress dream, but he's not going to discuss that. Not right now, anyway, because that would just be... awkward.]

[decrees]

[That's quite alright, he had one as well. It involved executing someone in front of a crowd while he looked down on the scene over a balcony. It was surreal and awful, but somehow better than what he was expecting from his dreams.]

I imagine this can't be easy for any of us. I... am hardly in the best state to look after anyone else at the moment.

[That's difficult to admit and Logan runs a hand back through his hair.]

I know the others must be terrified, especially the children. Many of the people here have attempted to offer me some assistance in... dealing with this, but I'm afraid this isn't something I will ever be okay with.

[He's never going to be okay again, actually. He's fucked up literally everything in his life and that's led to his only friend dying and his country doomed to destruction.]

...I will continue to do what I can for everyone.

[That's all he has left, really.]

This will... probably only get worse.

[It's a gentle warning, because while Cabanela doesn't mind taking charge between the two of them, but if the next person to go is someone important to him, well...

He's already lost someone he cares about.]

It's... different, I know, the circumstances are completely different, but I understand what you're going through.

If you would like, we can discuss this more in private, of course.

[Because this isn't the sort of thing he wants to talk about when children can hear it. The last thing he wants to do is upset people more.]

It's ooonly an offer, of course. I'm not gonna force you.

[decrees]

...Nothing could possibly be worse than what I have already been through.

[He doomed his country, sacrificed his only friend, and he's still stuck here trying to stay sane and that's fighting a losing battle. It doesn't matter who dies here; nothing can be as awful as what he's already lived through. There's nothing in the words though, they're stated as a fact.]

I... I'm not sure I'm up to that now. There is a good deal I would have to explain and I... couldn't. Not then and not now.

[It would have helped, wouldn't it? If he'd just allowed Reaver to explain the situation back home, maybe... No. It won't do to think about it like that.]

My apologies. I do appreciate the offer.

[perpend]

[He nods. It was just an offer, and he had been expecting Logan to turn down the offer; a part of his is grateful, even, because there are things he doesn't really want to talk about.]

There's no rush or anything, of course. We've all been through too much in the last couple of days.

You, more than mooost of us.

[decrees]

[Logan nods, though it's stiff. He drops his gaze and moves to play with the sash across his chest.]

...I have had to make incredibly difficult decisions before, but they were never quite as... personal as this. I have never faced anything quite like this before.

[He regrets everything. That's not something he can say, since it would be admitting that he would have preferred everyone else in that courtroom died instead of Reaver, but... well. At least then he wouldn't feel like this.]

...My apologies. I understand this was not easy for anyone else either.

[It's just kind of hard to remember that right now.]

[perpend]

I can't save I've ever had to make a decision like this, either, maaan.

[Despite the nickname, he sounds very somber.]

It's fine. Reaver was your friend. I'm sure the people who knew Kaneki well were having similar problems; it's only natural.

[decrees]

...It was different with Kaneki. He was killed and that... that was horrible. I liked him; I didn't want him to die. But that's different than having to execute someone, than choosing your own life over someone else's.

I had to let Reaver die. There wasn't any other option. But I couldn't vote for him; I couldn't send him to his death.

[He gets what you're trying to say, but these are two situations he can't possibly compare.]

[...You're a mess, Logan.]

I don't think anyone can blame you for that, you know. It was a terrible situation.

[decrees]

...It doesn't matter if no one else blames me for it. I'll always blame myself.

[And that's the issue, isn't it? It's the same with everything he's done to Albion.]

I can never make up for what I've done. I can never apologize for what I've done. There was no way to ensure Albion's survival in a situation like that. Still, knowing that I've doomed my country... I'm not sure I can go back and face it.

[He has to, of course. He isn't a coward and he can't run away from this. He has to face it.]

[perpend]

If you're a just king, I'm sure your people will understand. You shouldn't worry so much about it.

[Ahahahahaha.]

[decrees]

[uhhhhhhhhhhh.... so do you want him to tell you where you're wrong, or]

They don't even know of the coming threat. It was not something I could tell them.

[yeah you can think he's a good person for a little while longer, okay]

[perpend]

[He hasn't forgotten about the "likes executions" thing, alright. He's just tying to do some sort of... something or other.]

There's still a chance we'll get out of here before that happens, isn't there?

[decrees]

...There is a year before the attack, yes.

[Well, a year and a few months, but that's not important.]

Even so, I have spent the past four years preparing and we are nowhere near ready to face it.

[And without Reaver's assistance...]

[perpend]

[He knows Logan isn't going to tell him what the hell he's actually up against, but "it" seemingly rules out a foreign country invading.]

I reeally wish I could help you out, but even if I could, there's nothing we can do while stuck in here.

[decrees]

I know. I have received offers from some of the others here. Perhaps they will be able to help.

[If they aren't... well. He's still trying to come to terms with that.]

[perpend]

We're noooot much of an army, but it's better than just sitting around.

[At least until they start learning about other potential doomed worlds....]

[decrees]

...I was relying on an army because there aren't any Heroes left in Albion. There are other worlds and people with other abilities that may be able to help.

[perpend]

That... must be terrible.

I have no abilities to speak of, but if I make it out of this alive, you have my support.

[decrees]

I appreciate it.

[It doesn't mean much right now, but he understands what Cabanela is getting at.]

I will do everything in my power to save Albion.
