Week 2.

WEEK 2
Two people are dead. Ken Kaneki has been murdered, Reaver has been executed - and perhaps most uncomfortably, the Conductor is proud of you all for adhering to due process.

(As always, by which he means that there is a process, and you all are certainly doing it.)

Saturday is given to regrouping and sleep; come Sunday morning, the clock chimes the hour at seven o'clock and there are no dead bodies to be found, so it can be assumed that all of you are safe for the time being. That said, you'll be feeling a little groggy when you wake up; it seems you've regained something that you didn't realize you'd lost...

However, once you've shaken that off, there are new things to be looked at; the previously closed-off area near the kitchen has been unlocked, and there's a new floor to be explored - consider it your reward for a job well done.

Ah, it isn't that impressive. I didn't see the point of it, but Mother insisted I make the castle mine as opposed to her's.

[and guess what he did there is a very beautiful statue of Logan out in the gardens because of course there is]

[Of course there is. You do you, Logan.

...a sad little smirk twitches on to Ashley's lips.] You know. It reminds me of Josh's family. They're rich. They bought a whole mountain. It's where the lodge is. Blackwood Lodge, Mt. Washington.

...I hope the mountains where you're from aren't like the ones I'm familiar with.

[The only people who live in the mountains are the Dwellers... for some reason Logan still can't figure out. Why would you live there where it's cold and harsh when you could go live in Brightwall. It's like a day away. Why would you do this to yourselves.]

What is the lodge like?

Before everything became...what it is? [So, before even last year.] Nice. Big. I've been going up there since...I was thirteen, I think? That's the first year Josh invited me. We always go in the winter, so it's freezing, but...well, when they used to go up there a lot, the Washingtons would make sure it was well cared for. I thought it'd get smaller as I got older, but...nope.

[A small laugh.] There's even secret passages. Only Josh's dad would build a vacation home with secret passages.

Ah, that sounds wonderful. I've never been particularly fond of the mountains or the cold, but it sounds like you enjoyed it.

[Past tense, of course.]

My family has a summer home in Millfields, right near Bower Lake. It has secret passages and spacious rooms as well.

...It's been a very long time since we last went.

[Logan and his sister never went back after their mother died. He wonders how it's doing, given that he didn't have anyone look after it. Whoops.]

I loved every visit. My parents never really had time for family vacations.

[The dutiful yarn provides a good place for her to look. That's right, loop this, stitch that...]

A lake, though. That sounds nice. Much warmer. Why'd you stop going? Was... Was everything too busy?

[She recalls his mother is dead...and he is a king, so of course.]

Ah... Well, my mother was ill for quite some time. She wanted to see me crowned before she died and not long after that she...

[It's been over a decade since she died. He thought he was okay discussing it, but apparently not.]

...I was incredibly busy afterwards and my sister has never been fond of being on her own. She wouldn't have wanted to stay there.

Oh. Yeah, I...kind of figured something like that...

[It's okay, death in general makes her uncomfortable, so.]

Besides, sometimes things just...make a place... [She sighs.] After Hannah and Beth, the Washingtons... They didn't go back up there. Not even with all the police, they just... If Josh hadn't invited us all back out of the blue, I don't think anyone would've gone back.

You...think she'd want to try again? If we ever get out of here?

I can only imagine what that was like.

[Both for the family and for you and your friends.]

...Honestly, I'm not sure. She was very angry with me, for good reason. Perhaps given enough time she'll calm down and maybe she will be able to enjoy it again, but...

[Well. He basically put his sister through one of these trials, slapped a time limit on it, and then killed everyone when she didn't choose quickly enough.]

You don't think you can get back to...anything good?

[uh well you see]

...I'm an only child, I don't know a lot about sibling fights.

[Ah...]

My sister is eight years younger than me. We aren't very close, unfortunately.

[Which is mostly his fault, since he's never known how to interact with her. He's been better with everyone here, especially all the girls that remind him of his sister. So clearly he's doing well.]

What I did to her was unforgivable. She said so herself.

I... am not interested in elaborating on that. My apologies.

[You really don't need to know what he put his sister through. Maybe he can pretend to be a halfway decent person for a little while longer.]

[Ahhh okay. We have reached a roadblock, Ashley nods a few times.]

Yeah, of course. Family stuff, personal. I understand. ...Well not understand-understand, but- you know what I mean.

...I'm sorry. That it was all...that that's how you left things. I really wish you could get- something, some closure or...resolution.

[...You tried it, Ashley...]

Of course. I imagine things are not going well in Albion right now, so she may be more willing to talk once I've returned.

[If only so she can go "how do you deal with so many dumbasses, this country is so stupid" because he's 100% convinced she will agree with him on that.]

[This isn't a good subject, is it, let's see if we can swing to talking in general again-]

...Is she gonna have to lead while you're gone? Oh, that must be just- how does it work? Is there a council or something?

She should be in charge, yes. We have never had to face anything quite like this before, but since she is the princess she is next in line for the throne. My adviser will most likely be in charge of everything while she finds her footing.

[Walter will have that under control. Hopefully things won't go straight to hell in his absence, but Logan doesn't sound very confident.]

I asked the Conductor to tell me about the state of affairs in Albion, but of course he didn't give me a response.

Just like he wouldn't tell me about my friends... [A pause.] Or maybe he couldn't. We don't know how much he knows, after all.

[She frowns, thoughtful.]

...At least she has your adviser. He's a good guy, yeah? And if- she's anything like you and your mother, she'll do great while we're...trying to get back.

...I suppose that's true.

[He doesn't like thinking about it though.]

I've heard that she looks exactly like my mother when she was younger. As for her personality she's... naive, but perhaps she'll grow up while I'm away.

[LITTLE DOES HE KNOW...]

...Sounds like Hannah.

[Ashley's voice cracks a bit while she speaks, but she smiles.]

She was such...such a kid. We were the same age, but she was always more...trusting, earnest. That's why we thought she'd just...

[A moment. Ashley tries to smile.]

Never mind me, I'm sure your sister will be fine.

...I'm sorry for everything that has happened to you, Ashley. You have been through so much, much more than anyone should ever have to go through.

[...he wishes he knew how to handle this better.]

If there is every anything I can do to assist you, please let me know.

[She sighs.]

I know. Thank you. I'm just- I'm trying to...be less this. That's why I offered to make so many things, give myself something to do, but all I am is...thinking about everything.

[And she just keeps on doing it still, crochet needles in-hand.]

Just talking about it h-helps. But I wish I could just- forget. That's fucked up.

...I understand. There are many things I wish I could forget as well.

Keeping yourself busy is a good method of trying to move forward. You're doing very well, Ashley.

Amazing what going through a weird murder-trust exercise with various shades of amnesia will do for the psyche.

...Thank you. I'm trying. I...you too. Doing well.

I've dealt with terrible situations before. This is... new, but it is nothing compared to what I've already been through.

[...Okay, Reaver's death is all sorts of fucked up, but even that isn't quite on the same level as what happened four years ago.]

We will continue to move forward, however. That is unfortunately all we can do at the moment.
