Week 2.

WEEK 2 Two people are dead. Ken Kaneki has been murdered, Reaver has been executed - and perhaps most uncomfortably, the Conductor is proud of you all for adhering to due process. (As always, by which he means that there is a process, and you all are certainly doing it.) Saturday is given to regrouping and sleep; come Sunday morning, the clock chimes the hour at seven o'clock and there are no dead bodies to be found, so it can be assumed that all of you are safe for the time being. That said, you'll be feeling a little groggy when you wake up; it seems you've regained something that you didn't realize you'd lost... However, once you've shaken that off, there are new things to be looked at; the previously closed-off area near the kitchen has been unlocked, and there's a new floor to be explored - consider it your reward for a job well done. [Shrug. Back to sorting the yarn by color. He's going to make this the most organized basket ever.]

That's how life on Mars is sometimes. You're on the frontier of human civilization, and you gotta be prepared for any sorta trouble that comes on in.

I do not think I would like living there. [Shudder.] Sounds too...stressful, or whatnot.

[He looks away from his work.] Nothin' wrong with stayin' on Earth if you want, but not everyone livin' on Mars has to be brave. Why, this one farmer I'm pals with, Felton, he's the best hypercattle rancher we got, also the biggest scaredy-cat you'd ever meet! Would never go back to livin' on Earth if ya asked him.

Besides, it's safe most of the time, thanks to the Marshal. He's the one we can always count on to protect the planet from trouble.

Huh. All kinds all places. Guess I'm just not a frontier kind of person then...

How do you protect a whole planet, though? That's a lot of ground to cover.

Well, he's in charge of the parts where humans live, mostly, and sometimes volcanoes or whatever else is bein' threatened by outside forces. He's got a special rocket horse for gettin' everywhere fast, ain't too much of a problem unless there's two things goin' on at the same time.

[Which...has happened, but things worked out in the end like they do.]

Not somethin' to worry about anymore, though. He ain't Marshal no more.

Okay, you lost me. How can he...not be himself anymore? Is that like a title?

Of course it's a title! I know his name is kinda ridiculous, but I don't think his parents were terrible enough to name him "Marshal"!

They got kids named Marshal in your time?

Marshall, yeah. It's not a common name, but it's a name.

That's gotta be confusin' if one of them becomes a marshal...

[Marshal Marshall. They'd have to ask everyone to call them by their last name, and their given name would forever be a shameful secret.

This is the stuff of tragedies.]
