It's time for an after party!

[About an hour after the trial and subsequent execution, Cabanela makes a decision.

They need to do something, keep the morale up, however little it may be.

Under each occupied room door people will find the following note written:

In difficult times such as this, it is important to carry on.
Don't give into despair; we must preservere.
If you don't want to be alone this evening, meet me in the dining hall.

[Upon entering the dinning hall, you will find Cabanela sitting at one of the tables; he has lit two candles that are placed at the center of the table, but there's nothing else to note.

You'll have to supply your own food, since he doesn't have much of an appetite.]

I imagine it would be incredibly difficult to see someone you care about being accused of murder.

There's no reason to apologize; our evidence was so circumstantial, until he....

Until he started getting desperate, there was no way to know for sure.

I'm not surprised he killed someone. He wasn't exaggerating when he said he's killed more than twenty-seven people.

[It's probably been at least that many in the past four years.]

He said it would be stupid to act without knowing what the final rule meant. I have to wonder if he was lying about that or if this was something he did on a whim.

[Probably the former...]

...I've never seen him panic.

[That admission is awkward, but it's something that's been bothering him since Reaver did the whole villain speech thing.]

I don't doubt he wasn't exaggerating.

[To do it so callously, with so little regard for Kaneki or anyone else, he's not surprised to hear Reaver was a killer; not with the game they're supposed to be playing.

Trust no one, that's the goal here.]

Maybe he saw the opportunity to end this, and took it, even without knowing the final rule.

[He's quiet for a moment.]

I wonder if he was afraid of what was going to happen to him.

[Cabanela sure as hell would start panicking if he knew his head was about to be cut off.]

...Didn't you see him? During the trial, he... he was short with everyone, he didn't mess with anyone like he normally would. He didn't answer all the questions he was asked and he dismissed things instead of considering them, no matter how ridiculous. Normally he would have taken the opportunity to tease me when I took him aside to inspect my hands for injuries, but he didn't bother. He was not handling any of that well.

I knew he had done it from the moment they mentioned that Kaneki's body was hanging from the chandelier. I wanted to believe it was someone else, but Reaver's behavior made it plain.

Of course he was afraid. I've never seen him more afraid.

[The words are shaking a bit but Logan's expression is stiff. Remember when you said he didn't know Reaver as well as he thought he did? Yeah. He knows Reaver very well.]

[He's silent for a very long moment.

Cabanela is still sure he didn't get everything right, that he missed some important things-- but apparently that didn't matter to the Conductor.

It wasn't a perfect, spotless investigation by any means. And he prides himself on getting everything right, for the right reasons.]

He was afraid of being caught. Or what the unknown catch for those killers found out was; he was afraid of death, wasn't he?

[There's absolutely no judgement in his tone. He's just asking a question.]

Of course he was afraid of death. Who wouldn't be, in a situation like that?

[Logan shakes his head.]

Had he known what the stakes were - that he would kill all of us if he got away with it - he wouldn't have killed Kaneki. I'm certain of that.

[...Because it would be far more beneficial to Reaver to keep Logan alive, but that's not the point.]

[Again, he's quiet for a long time.]

Even if he hadn't done it, someone still would have been the first to crack.

[This situation just means that they've all doomed your country, nbd]

I know they would have. We were never meant to live peacefully here. Even if we had decided to remain here without complaint, how long would Kaneki have lasted before he needed to eat?

...I suppose it isn't fair to pass judgement when I do not know his full situation. It's... been a long day.

[To put it lightly.]

A couple months here incident-free, and he could have been the first one to attack a person.

[But there's something else on his mind.]

You and Reaver both indicated your country would be in trouble because of something only the two of you knew about. Was it some sort of invading army?

[He's only guessing because Logan is a king and Reaver seemed the sort of person to know everything going on.]

[That gets him to tense up immediately and Logan moves to mess with the sash across his chest, keeping his eyes downcast.]

That... isn't something I can talk about now.

[Or ever. Probably.]

[...He's not sure how to take that, but it's probably not something that matters now.]

I see.

...I'm sorry. For everything.

[Especially accusing Logan of murder just to rule out the possibility.]

[It's nothing personal. It's just traumatizing and Logan really can't talk about that, especially not after what he's been through today.]

As am I.

[No hard feelings about that, honestly. Finding the truth is important and he was being a pain about it.]

...I... am glad you all came to the correct conclusion. Not because I wanted anything like that to happen, but because I could not allow everyone to die. I told several of the others I will look after them as if they are citizens of Albion and I mean it. I've already failed one of my citizens.

[There aren't enough words in any language for just how sorry he is.]

[Everyone suspecting your only friend of murder couldn't have been easy.

........He understands that far too well.]

We have to hang on, for the sake of everyone we are trying to protect. Not just here, but at home, too.

[They all have too much riding on this now.]

I know.

[That's what caused him to decide not to fight this, after all. If he'd wanted to, maybe he could have convinced enough people to throw the vote. He doubts it, but the lives of six million people aren't something that can be thrown away so easily.

But he didn't try to fight it. He allowed Reaver to die. To "take responsibility" for his actions.]

My duty is to Albion and I will continue to do everything in my power to protect it. Until a time when I can return home, I shall do what I can to protect the people here.

[It's a purpose and right now, he needs that more than anything else.]

[It's a good thing a number of them have a resolute, unwavering purpose. Who knows what's going to happen from here on out-- he's not sure he wants to know what might happen if one of those among them who have so many people to protect ends up...]

[He was thinking more of Rakka and Blue and... well, you get the idea.

NOT THAT HE LIKES THE IDEA OF CHILD SOLDIERS AT ALL.]

[Okay, but just look at Blue and tell him that girl wouldn't find a way to take care of herself. There's no way, she'd totally be fine.]

After everything that has happened here, I can only hope killing him will be sufficiently satisfying.
