RESISTANCE MEETING

[The clock chimes at 10PM as it always does, and if you're one of the people who decided to go to the meeting, you'll find the conference room is properly set up to accommodate all 27 remaining students. If you were expecting refreshments or anything then tough luck. Logan can't cook and the kitchen's closed now.

Logan has taken the chair at one end of the table because of course he has, but he'll wait until most people are gathered before speaking up.]

I'm sure you're all aware of why this meeting is absolutely necessary after that... announcement. What we need to do is share any information we have about this place and our captor. The Conductor will answer letters, but I have not gotten anything particularly useful from him.

No, I mean- [ Jean didn't explain this very well. ] We're only swinging around and climbing stuff when we're fighting Titans. Otherwise everyone just walks or rides horses everywhere .

...Titans. [More aliens and monsters to keep in mind.] And you're trainin' to fight giants at your age?

I'm already fighting them. I graduated from training more than a month ago.

...You're fifteen, ain't you? Is this normal where you're from?

Of course. [ You mean you don't have literal child soldiers all over your weird planet? ] When you turn thirteen, you have to either sign up for military training or go work on a farm or in a factory.

No, when you turn thirteen, you're still goin' to school. You enroll in a military school when you're eighteen, graduate in your twenties. That's how it works in my time. Is this one of those things were you did things young because you didn't live long back in the day?

I don't know. Maybe?

[ It seems reasonable enough that people on worlds without Titans have a longer lifespan, but he still kinda thinks Mordecai might be fucking with him right now. ]

So if you don't actually start working until you're eighteen, what do you do during those five extra years?

Do whatever normal kids do. School, helpin' around the house, goin' on adventures and learnin' about yourself. Me, I worked at the saloon when my father still owned it. All depends on where you're from.

[Sending kids off to fight monsters sounds like grounds for a revolution in his society.]

You need some time to live before you actually do somethin' dangerous like that.

It makes sense to wait if you've got a shop or a bar to take over. Are there just a lot of tradesmen in your world?

How do you expect us to live if there's no one to fight the Titans?

Sure, on Mars. It's a new human settlement, of course we need plenty of farmers and tradesmen. But no Titans, there or on Earth. Only in old storybooks and myths.

...Which is why I would have thought your story was fake, iffen it wasn't for the fact we're all from different dimensions.

I don't know, folks have their reasons. If I didn't know you were an actual soldier, I woulda thought it was some kinda fantasy story you really wished was real. Only turns out it is.

Hold on, why would wanting to live in a world with Titans appeal to anyone? [ Sorry, Mordecai, you're gonna have to explain escapism to him. ]

'Cause most kids dream about havin' adventures, fightin' outlaws and monsters. You know, pretendin' to be heroes even if their lives ain't as interestin' as the ones in books.

[That's why stories exist??]

That's... [ So fucking frustrating to even think about. ] That's stupid. Anyone who encountered a Titan for the first time would just want to go home.

That's why they only want to read about trouble, not experience it. I'm sure meetin' one of them Titans is a horrifyin' experience, but you ask anyone half your age, they think it's cool.
