[There's not much that can be believed about that trial. Or that execution. Still, like before, two hours after everyone leaves, they'll find a note slipped underneath their doors.]

We have to stick together. The dining room is there for anyone that needs a quiet space, and I cooked dinner.

Hibiki made some coffee and dessert for all of us.

[Today's selection includes potato pancakes and a light coffee cake. Hibiki has lit two more candles in the dining hall. It doesn't take long before Mordecai lights a third.]

Well, then. And the whole time I was thinkin' someone other than the police came in to rescue you, especially since you got stabbed at one point. It ain't exactly easy to move around once that happens.

How? You patched yourself up while they weren't around?

Yeah...they figured I couldn't get my hands free, so it didn't matter if they left me alone. I suppose.

They honestly didn't strike me as particularly bright? Or sane.

You know, from the stories I'm told, not many criminals are. Thinkin' that once they got you hostage, they're set for anythin'. Once, I had some bandits hold up my entire saloon so the Marshal could come and they'd kill him, but instead of doin' that, they sang.

...It was because of the piano, but they got shot before they were done. Made a fine mess everywhere, that did.

But you're lucky you made it out alive. You loose a lotta blood when you get stabbed.

Yeah, it was...definitely something.

More than somethin'! Just how did you do it?!

They were both...distracted, I suppose. The man had gone into the basement, and that horrid wife of his was in a shed in the back. I found what I needed in their house, and then I slipped out.

Huh. [Dumb villains, being dumb.] And what about your stab wound?

I don't know how long ago that was, but I guess it must have been fine. I haven't got it now.

So more than a few years, seein' that mine ain't completely healed yet. [What an unexpected indicator of lost time.] Is that normal where you're from, all this kidnappin' and stabbin'? That would never go by quietly on Mars.

No. I guess I'm just unlucky...well, I always knew that.

Most folks are unlucky, from my experience. Hard to find anyone who hasn't run across trouble more often than they needed.

But that? That goes past unlucky. More like...bein' toyed by fate.
