Week 6.

WEEK 6

Losing three people in one week isn't very nice, is it? Morty Smith, Rakka, and Dio Brando have all joined the deceased. It will be hard to forget them. It will be even harder to forget that execution and Dio's flying, screaming head.

Life must go on though and as usual, the group has at least a little bit of time to recover. Saturday can be dedicated to rest and sleep; on Sunday morning, the clock chimes the hour at seven o'clock. The stairwells are clear of bodies; there's no more death to be dealt with for the time being. Unless, of course, you happened to recover something particularly unfortunate in your dreams...

Once again, there's a new floor to explore; your reward for doing your job well.

Some of your antics have resulted in more rule changes, effective immediately. You might want to avoid breaking those if you're fond of staying alive.

But then again, there are ghosts. Maybe dying wouldn't be so bad after all.

Yup, I remember him. [If Levi were standing in a crowd of soldiers, Mordecai feels he could easily pick him out.

...He looks concerned when Jean breaks the news.
] So you've been promoted? I dunno how military works, but movin' you to another squad must be important. [Only memories of fighting. That's not what a 15-year-old should remember.]

[ Considering Jean has previously remembered Titans showing up inside the Walls and his own threats to murder someone this is a downright happy memory.

Even if Mordecai is still right.
]

Yeah... I don't know him very well, but I don't have a lot of experience. It must be important if he wanted a bunch of fresh graduates helping him out.

[ Important... or maybe just desperate. ]

[Mordecai cuts off a piece of his quiche.]

You must have somethin' important he sees in you. Only reason I can think of. I guess-- [he catches himself]

No, I'm sure I can see where your leader's comin' from. It's kinda how I was picked to fight off an evil dictator from another timeline, along with some actual soldiers. See, this mornin' I remembered bein' the one to defeat him once and for all, even though I didn't think I could do anythin'.

V'Staulu said I had potential in me. Must be the case for your short soldier, too. You got a special somethin' that just needs a bit of proddin' to get out.
openterrain: (ᴡᴇ were caught up)

[personal profile] openterrain 2015-12-10 05:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah-- yeah, I guess you're right.

[ Jean is, admittedly, a little taken aback. Praise in his world usually comes in the form of informing him that his survival is evidence of his hard work and how he needs to be sure to continue working hard in the future. This is...

Sort of overwhelming, to be honest, and that pleased but embarrassed look hasn't faded. Jean's glad he's suddenly got an excuse to change subjects.
]

I was wondering why you looked pretty happy this morning. I guess that guy must have been pretty dangerous?
forcegalactic: (why is there trouble in this place?)

[personal profile] forcegalactic 2015-12-10 06:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooooh, he sure was. Went back in time to stop himself from stayin' good and then went onto destroyin' the universe. All I could do was watch the others get killed while tryin' to stop him until I got the idea of askin' V'Stalu to hand over his power to me.

Next thing I remember, I gave myself invulnerability, took away all of Evil Jim's powers and sucked out Good Jim from his body. Who shot him. [As those main characters do.] Then I went onto bringin' everyone back to life, rescuin' folks what were trapped in a wormhole, then went back to Mars to resurrect my saloon.

[The start of a hero. So many things make sense now: going back to being a bartender, having space powers...]

Made me think that I do have what it takes to get us outta here. I saved the universe once, I think I can at least be of some use here.

[personal profile] openterrain 2015-12-11 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
[ Jean just looks more and more lost the more Mordecai explains, but he's pretty sure he at least gets the gist of it. He can see why Mordecai is happy.

He can also see how that brings up something even more concerning, but he's not about to bring that up right now.
]

Hell, it sounds like the Conductor probably can't stop you, once you get your powers back.
forcegalactic: (thinking)

[personal profile] forcegalactic 2015-12-11 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
[Mordecai nods.] Which is why he needed a god to take those powers away. And if it were anyone else on Mars, I coulda come over here and rescue everyone the minute I found out where this is. I guess...he took me for that reason.

[It's strange. He came here thinking it made no sense for the Conductor to kidnap a normal bartender when there were more prominent people on Mars that could spearhead rescue missions. It turns out he had it completely wrong.]
openterrain: (ʙʀɪɴɢɪɴɢ darkness from above)

[personal profile] openterrain 2015-12-11 07:49 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Personally, Jean thinks messing with Mordecai at all sounds like a terrible idea for a murder school that kidnaps its students. Why even bother when they could have just ignored him and never had to worry about it. ]

It's kind reckless of him to go after you or anyone you know in the first place, isn't it? It makes me think they might have something else planned.
forcegalactic: (thinking)

[personal profile] forcegalactic 2015-12-11 07:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Kidnap the mayor, cause unrest in town, show off they can kidnap someone with space powers. Then take away my memories so I forgot I had 'em.

[He recalls that someone mentioned the Conductor wasn't the one returning their memories, so forgetting the past three years of his life must be part of the plan.]

So I come here, afraid of what will happen and not knowin' if I'm anythin' more than a barkeep that lost his saloon. I doubt I woulda acted the way I did if I knew about savin' the universe from day one.

And you. [He looks at Jean.] What did you remember when you first came here?
openterrain: (ɢʀᴇᴀᴛ clouds roll over the hills)

[personal profile] openterrain 2015-12-12 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
[ Ahh, now that makes sense. Jean nods. ]

Trying to intimidate everyone.

[ 'To what end' is a slightly different question, but Jean gets it for now. ]

Me?

[ That's a relevant question, he guesses. He can already see where Mordecai is going with it. ]

I was in the middle of a forest. We were out there on a mission not even the regular soldiers were allowed to know all the details of. I didn't know anything about there being Titans inside the Walls, or about joining Captain Levi's squad.
forcegalactic: (thinking)

[personal profile] forcegalactic 2015-12-12 03:04 am (UTC)(link)
[Walls of the city, Mordecai assumes. A terribly dangerous situation that would help with Jean being more afraid of everything, but joining the short soldier's squad is a happy memory, and the Conductor won't have any of that.]

You came in as a regular soldier, right? There wouldn't be much reason for you to think you could be a lot more, much like myself and my powers. If we knew what we were capable of, we wouldn't be havin' an easier time dealin' with out current situation.
openterrain: (ɪɴ your pose)

[personal profile] openterrain 2015-12-12 03:47 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Damn, that does make a lot of sense. And if someone besides the Conductor and his friend is the one that's giving their memories back. ]

You think that's why it seems like everyone's been remembering something important, and not just mundane things?
forcegalactic: WM/IL looks like a Christmas sweater (Common sense activate!)

[personal profile] forcegalactic 2015-12-12 03:55 pm (UTC)(link)
It's so we try to get better at escapin'. [Even Elise. Despite her insistence that the memory of a delicious salad was unimportant, she was visiting a new neighbor at that time. It's an important event for normal people.]

Thought why I remember gettin' into an argument with my wife, I will never understand. [That memory also involves his friends turning into murder zombies, but it might be slightly relevant. He has to be cautious, after all.] ...Guess our benefactor ain't as perfect as he could be.
openterrain: (ɪɴ your pose)

[personal profile] openterrain 2015-12-13 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
Are you sure?

[ Jean gives Mordecai a level look, this time. ]

I mean, I don't know what the fight is about. But maybe what you were fighting about, or how you were fighting, or who won, isn't important to who you are?
forcegalactic: (what the shit)

[personal profile] forcegalactic 2015-12-13 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
[He avoids looking at Jean.]

Just about how the Murdermen invaded the hotel I was runnin'. My wife was comin' home on break from work and really needs a stress-free environment when she's home. Findin' everyone tryin' to murder me is the exact opposite.

...I tried tellin' her it wasn't my fault, but she left to go back to work anyway.

[He generally felt really awful when he woke up.]
openterrain: (ᴏʜ where do we begin)

[personal profile] openterrain 2015-12-13 05:25 pm (UTC)(link)
[ God damnit, Jean, can't you comfort anyone properly? ]

... It sounds like there are lots of murderous things on Mars.
forcegalactic: Will edit this art so many times (pondering)

[...]

Yeah, there are.
openterrain: (ɢʀᴇᴀᴛ clouds roll over the hills)

[personal profile] openterrain 2015-12-20 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought the future was supposed to be safer than where I came from.

[ His tone isn't exactly accusatory, but it is skeptical. Come on, space dad, don't let him down. ]
forcegalactic: (wow I'm offended)

[personal profile] forcegalactic 2015-12-20 08:25 pm (UTC)(link)
We don't have to worry about war and starvation and Titans every day. Just criminals. And Earth is a ton safer than any other human settlement.
openterrain: (ᴏʜ where do we begin)

[personal profile] openterrain 2015-12-21 05:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I guess that's fair.

[ Though, you know, that does make him wonder about something else. ]

... Hey. You mentioned criminals. Is murder really common on Mars?
forcegalactic: Will edit this art so many times (pondering)

[personal profile] forcegalactic 2015-12-21 06:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Just as common as any place far from the center of civilization. [The center of human civilization, obviously. Aliens are safest on their home planets, and it's just the same with Earthlings.] We only got one lawman on Mars, some vigilantes, and me lookin' after the town. Ain't enough deterrent for outlaws to hide out there.
