WEEK 5.

WEEK 5
Tabitha Smith, Sigrun Eide, and Solf J Kimblee are all dead. Regardless of what you think of the trial or the events leading up to it, there's no denying that you can feel the dent in your numbers now. After all, ten people are gone now.

It may be hard, but all you can do is keep going.

Saturday is given to regrouping and sleep; come Sunday morning, the clock chimes the hour at seven o'clock and there are no dead bodies to be found, so it can be assumed that all of you are safe for the time being. That said, you'll be feeling a little groggy when you wake up; it seems you've regained something that you didn't realize you'd lost...

What with Jericho's excitement at the last trial, it's evident now more than ever that the new floor that's opened up to you is a gift, a reward for a job well-done. Because while surviving is something that you'll continue to try to do of your own merit...well.

Let's say that he's so, so very proud of you.

That said, the paints and the stuff that go with them seem normal; where to now?]

[ I promise she likes Archer. I really, really promise this.

Let's see... If she can get to the back wall, the one opposite of the door, she'll try and just sort of... feel around? She's trying to find anything that might be off, seeing as people have found things like that before. ]

[There isn't anything immediately amiss, but it's also probably worth noting that the shelves back here aren't screwed into the walls; they're freestanding.]

[ Ooh, cool. She's gonna clear some space and...

...uh. Can she sort of like... Push or pull them over or something? Find a spot where she's not gonna get crushed if she does that and then do it? ]

[How are you doing this, like.

Are we just trying to shove them in a direction that is generally out of the way or are we just going WELP OVER THEY GO onto the floor, or]

[ ON THE FLOOR, LIKE A REAL REBEL!! ]

[AND OVER IT GOES right onto the floor, there is now a mess. Also oddly unbreakable shelves? The shelves do not seem to have taken any damage. Weird.

That said, though, you are promptly rewarded with fucking nothing-

Or, you know, it would be fucking nothing, were there not a door set into the wall. The door's probably an important detail.]

[ That is weird, but holy crap!! It's not fucking nothing!!!

Time to check out this door. Does it have a handle or any way to open it, really? ]

[It's got one of those weird recessed handles that starts flat against the door and dips inward, the sort you wrap your fingers around to grab onto.

Looks like it slides to the side.]

[ Oh, good, the bane of my existence finally makes an appearance in roleplay. She's gonna just slide it open then! Or try to. ]

[It actually does open! Behind door #1, it looks like we've got -

A darkened hallway leading off to the side. You going to go in?]

[ Damn, that's dark. She should probably get something to light the way—

nah, that'll take too much time, seeing as a bunch of that stuff is on the first floor. Yep, she's just going in!! ]

[Fortunately, there aren't any, like, head-exploding tripwires on the floor or anything, because man that would suck. BUT ANYWAY - let's not dwell on stuff that's not here, and focus on the stuff that is. Which...actually, that also seems to be fucking nothing until you hit the far wall.

Seems like there's another door here. Same sort of deal as the last one you opened, so it might take some feeling around to find it, but once you do, it'll slide open and...well, it looks like this room is managing to be even darker than the hallway, given that it's tucked away back here in, uh, the dark.

So.

What now?]

[ ...Before she decides she actually does have to go down to get some light, she's gonna feel around the nearby walls for a lightswitch or something. Is there one of those? ]

[OH HEY there is absolutely a lightswitch, and there's probably one in the hallway somewhere too, just saying.

That said, the lights are a certain kind of ambient that you'd find in a horror movie involving abandoned buildings - that is to say that they're dim, they're fluorescent, and they're kind of buzzing and flickering in a mildly obnoxious sort of way, but at the very least the room seems illuminated. It also appears to be done up differently to the rest of the building - it's all white tile, sort of like it is in the pit, and there's next to nothing in here.

There's a table in the middle of the room, a simple industrial thing with legs that can be folded down if you decided for whatever godforsaken reason that you wanted to take it somewhere, and along the back walls it looks like there's a bunch of filing cabinets made of sturdy metal.]

[ don't shame me for being stupid.

Anyway, wow, this is... Different. Markedly different, actually, but she's not going to dwell on that for too long; there's points of interests to get to. Like those filing cabinets! She's gonna go check them out, starting at the leftmost ones—are they locked, since I know some (most?) cabinets can do that, or can she just pull one open? ]

[The top drawer on the leftmost one seems like it can be opened! However, these are in fact all cabinets that can lock, just to have that be something to keep in mind.]

[ Thanks for the note ♥! She'll open that one then. What've we got? ]

[While it looks mostly empty and seems to have possibly been mostly cleared it, it looks like we've got a file folder down on the bottom, with a single word written on the labeling portion of it.

CONDUCTOR]

[ ~~oh shit~~ ...It's the only relevant thing in here, so she'll take it and... let's open it on that table in the center there, like a Real Detective.

What secrets does this strangely labeled folder hold? ]

[There's a photograph clipped to the inside front cover, of someone that should look incredibly familiar.

The first page seems to be text, and it reads as follows:]

He's back again. The man's an absolute cockroach, seeing as the last four times weren't enough.

We probably can't orchestrate another accident for a lot of reasons. He's gone way too long this time without being caught, though, and it looks like he's changed some things around. I don't know if it's because he remembers or just a happy coincidence. He's always remembered a little too much for my liking, and I'm not sure if that's something that can be fixed, but it's possible he just got lucky. Especially since he isn't the sole thing that's changed course; he doesn't have enough power to manage whatever the hell's going on in his world this time.

He'll need to be put down again. Hopefully this time it sticks.

[ ...That sure is Kimblee, and this sure is a lot of text. At least she's being a decent sort and not just skimming over it—she liked the man, for whatever that's worth, the least she can do is learn what's in his file (but his title was Observant, not Conductor...

Guess he died a lot more than he might remember he did. First page implies there's more—is there? She'll take the first one and lay it aside to get to the next ones if there are. ]

He's using his old title again. I'll buy a lot of things as being some sort of coincidence or accident, but this isn't one of them. He doesn't seem to know where he got it, though, so that's a point in my favor.

We'll see what can be done about him, now that we have something of an idea of what's going on. It shouldn't be too hard, all things considered. It's been five years and he's half out of his mind by now.

[There's a fair amount of blank space on the page, followed by: ]

First attempt at neutralizing Subject OBSERVANT failed.
Second attempt set to begin as soon as humanly possible.

[And the next page has this to say:]

Subject OBSERVANT has chosen the title CONDUCTOR for himself; twenty-nine people involved this time. He's utilizing something called the Gate to do this, though the exact method seems to be beyond his specific knowledge or control. It seems that his actions in doing this were not planned, but rather opportunistic in nature. Some sort of "social experiment" with the byproducts of other experimentation carried out by his God and his associates.

The world seems to be largely dead, having been ravaged by war and various cataclysms over the past five years. This is likely the reason behind their experimentation with the Gate, though that has yet to be ascertained. Even if everything seems to be largely coincidental, however, there will be a stop put to it.

[And the final page in the set:]

OBSERVANT/CONDUCTOR has been neutralized by one of his own Participants. However, there's no guarantee that he won't resurface again later.

A more permanent solution needs to be found.

[ ...This is a lot, and most of it doesn't make sense to her; according to Kimblee, he died getting his throat torn out and being eaten alive— maybe there was a Participant (something like their set-up? they're Participants after all—) that could do that, but...?

...

She's gonna put these back in the folder and close it.

Can any of the other cabinets be opened, or is that it? ]
