WEEK 5
Tabitha Smith, Sigrun Eide, and Solf J Kimblee are all dead. Regardless of what you think of the trial or the events leading up to it, there's no denying that you can feel the dent in your numbers now. After all, ten people are gone now.

It may be hard, but all you can do is keep going.

Saturday is given to regrouping and sleep; come Sunday morning, the clock chimes the hour at seven o'clock and there are no dead bodies to be found, so it can be assumed that all of you are safe for the time being. That said, you'll be feeling a little groggy when you wake up; it seems you've regained something that you didn't realize you'd lost...

What with Jericho's excitement at the last trial, it's evident now more than ever that the new floor that's opened up to you is a gift, a reward for a job well-done. Because while surviving is something that you'll continue to try to do of your own merit...well.

Let's say that he's so, so very proud of you.

Neither have I, and I can't sense the bats either... but for all I know, they took that sense from me too.

Well, if any do show up, I'll certainly be surprised. But their presence would provide a rather large clue, wouldn't it?

What exactly is it that you're attempting to attract them with?

Oh, it's some specialized jerky that we make back home for our bats. [ A little nod. ]

I've gotten loads of it out of the vending machine now.

[ Where to next... mmm. Maybe one of the side rooms? ]

Oh, of course. Naturally they would give you the bat feed when there are no bats. [...] Is keeping bats a custom that your family has, or...?

[Vampires don't exist in his world, so the whole vampires and bats stereotype is lost to him.]

Oh, of course! I mean, we Markers have worked with bats for centuries and centuries. They have a lot of uses.

[ She laughs a little. ]

It's a vampire thing, though I've got some skill with them.

Oh, is it? What exactly do you do with them?

[He's figures they must be capable of being trained by Elda's kind, but what even for?]

Oh, a great many things! You can use them to fly, if you collect enough in one place and have them lift up some loose clothing like a cap or overcoat. [ she counts this off on her finger ] They can be used to channel the erase of memory through, we use them to maintain the barrier in the same capacity... you can use them to spy on key locations around town, and I know little Anju's even trained a number of them to go out during the day.

Ah, so there are quite a few common uses for training them as there are for birds and wyverns.

[Well, even wyverns are a pretty niche example. But to him, so are bats.]

Erasing memories, though? I can't say I expected that.

[And he has no idea where to even start with the mention of a barrier.]

That's a natural ability of vampires.

[ It's why, tomorrow, that incentive will feel so threatening to her: it's real. ] When we hunt, we take the human's blood, and then erase their memories of the attack happening. It's common practice.

Charm...ing...

[Holy shit what does he say to any of that?? Well obviously she's not doing any of that here, so...]

And I assume you have control over how much is erased?

Mmmhm. Though it's not like it's all a cinch. Erasing the last thirty minutes or even the last few hours of someone's mind is simple. But if you want to pick out specific things? The more nuanced you're being, the harder it is.

Yeah, that makes sense. Natural abilities like that are never so easy. It seems like something that would require a good amount of practice.

Practice and a certain level of natural talent.

Yes, yes, of course. I imagine not just any vampire could reach such levels.

[...and since Elda specifically pointed it out and he doubts she can actually do it here-]

How far have you gotten with it, then?

Well, normally, it would only take me a few seconds to erase you back to being a four year old.

[...if it means anything, he doesn't seem to doubt her. Shit.]

I don't think you could've phrased it any less horrifically.

Well, if it's true, is there any real reason to be modest?

Oh, not at all. Twenty-five years... [Yikes.] Far more than enough to erase the memories of whatever could happen here.

[Like, for covering up a murder in the event of potential witnesses. Fun but unfortunate things like that.]

Yep! That's about the only ability I've realized might have made things a bit too easy for me here.

[ She says this cheerily though?? Kimblee sort of helped her realize it. ]

[It's pretty crazy to imagine that really fucking with trial proceedings and whatnot.]

I do have to wonder how they did, though. [Shut off abilities like that, he means.] Alena wasn't much of a talker when it came to that subject, unsurprisingly.

Yeah I never really bothered to ask other than to complain the first time.

[ She got spited for that so.

Shrug. ]

It's biology, so I have no idea.

I did ask, since the changes I encountered were biological as well. [With a shrug,] But, Alena being as blunt as she is, refused to give me an actual reason for it. I suppose there is not much point in dwelling on it, but it does bother me a bit by not knowing... These are our bodies, after all.

[He's still really conflicted about it.]

Oh, is your magic stuff not really magic either?

[ She nods a little. ]

...somewhat? It is naturally within us when we are born, but it must be "awakened" to be accessed. Mine has been active since I was, oh...a young teenager. I didn't think it could be "turned off", so to speak.
