WEEK 5
Tabitha Smith, Sigrun Eide, and Solf J Kimblee are all dead. Regardless of what you think of the trial or the events leading up to it, there's no denying that you can feel the dent in your numbers now. After all, ten people are gone now.

It may be hard, but all you can do is keep going.

Saturday is given to regrouping and sleep; come Sunday morning, the clock chimes the hour at seven o'clock and there are no dead bodies to be found, so it can be assumed that all of you are safe for the time being. That said, you'll be feeling a little groggy when you wake up; it seems you've regained something that you didn't realize you'd lost...

What with Jericho's excitement at the last trial, it's evident now more than ever that the new floor that's opened up to you is a gift, a reward for a job well-done. Because while surviving is something that you'll continue to try to do of your own merit...well.

Let's say that he's so, so very proud of you.

I see. I would love to see some of your designs at some point, if you have developed any here.

[She isn't very knowledgeable in either field, so she'd be interested to see them. As he takes a seat, she moves the pictures slightly so he can see. There are a few, but they look to be of the same two people: a young woman, proud and determined, standing with a sword strapped to her belt, and a young woman, wearing a warm smile and holding what looks like a wand.]

The people who are dearest to me, at the moment. But - I love to draw battle scenes and landscapes, too.

I haven't done much, since I don't usually make the things myself. But, sure.

[It wouldn't be Rideaux if he didn't take every opportunity to show off, after all.

He leans in so he can get a good look at the pictures.]

Oh, these are quite good. [He's being sincere about that.] It's strange to say, but I appreciate seeing weapons like those again. I've gotten the sense that they are not commonplace for a lot of people here.

[She gives a nod to his statement.]

Thank you, that's kind of you to say. And - it is strange to me as well, I will admit. It feels a bit odd to be without my sword, but I imagine it will be a while until I regain it.

Yeah, I am the same way with my knives. I honestly wonder if they're sitting somewhere in the vending machine considering some of the things I've seen come out of it.

[He's pretty sure he's seen people getting legit weapons from it. And not to mention all these other personal belongings...]

I take it they were not the normal sort of knives you would see in a kitchen?

Oh, certainly not. You won't be cutting vegetables with these. [And if someone got his knives and did that with them, he would be offended.] They are better suited for throwing.

How about your sword? Any distinct features?

It is a normal broadsword in form, but extremely well made. The finest steel was used by our most skilled blacksmiths. I've never encountered a finer example of craftsmanship.

[A tilt of her head.]

What made you decide on throwing knives as your weapon of choice?

Then I imagine it would be unmistakable if it came out of the vending machine.

[...however that works. He's no longer questioning it.

As for his weapon of choice:]

Because they fit my rather mobile fighting style. My other occupation as a doctor requires a great deal of precision, so I am able to apply it to combat as well by throwing the knives at a distance. In addition, they can be used in close-range combat in a pinch.

[She tries to prevent it, but one corner of her mouth turns up in a half smile.]

A doctor and a fighter... That's certainly an interesting combination. What drew you to both? Are they both necessary skills for your profession?

[Heh.]

Not something you would expect, I know. Simply put, the two occupations chose me in a way, and called out to me for separate reasons. I was recruited into Dimensional Affairs when I was young, because the ability I possess is necessary for traversing dimensions. The work is dangerous, and thus it is necessary for me to know how to defend myself. I later attended medical school to pursue a career in my company's medical department alongside my work in Dimensional Affairs. My official title there is "medical agent".

[He props up his head with an arm as he mulls over his explanation.]

If it makes it easier, feel free to think of me as a combat medic. I am a medical professional who happens to also see quite a bit of battle.

The ability you possess...?

[She's curious about that, though she continues on as well.]

It sounds like an eventful line of work, if nothing else.

Yes. It is something that I was born with, and it is quite rare. Needless to say that a career in Dimensional Affairs is natural for people like me, because people with this ability are in high demand.

[But his tone doesn't imply that he's bragging about it. He actually seems pretty somber.]

Eventful is an understatement. There is a reason why I can't wait to be able to retire from it.

What is the ability you're speaking of? I assume it's more rare than being trained in combat or being a doctor.

[She tilts her head.]

Is it something that does a great deal of good, at the very least?

[There's a pause here, like he's not sure if he feels like elaborating on his ability. In the end, he decides "screw it".]

"The Chromatus". It is an ability that was granted to a certain bloodline of humans by a Great Spirit called Chronos. As for whether it is used for good or not...well, that is up for debate, I would imagine.

[As for what he means by that...]

You did see the secrets, did you not?

I see. So, as with most things, it can used for good or ill?

[She hesitates, then shakes her head.]

...No. Call it pride or foolishness, but I refuse to read them in their entirety.

[Oh, wow. That gets a look from Rideaux. A little bit of surprise, a little bit of disbelief.]

I'll call it quite the exercise in self-restraint.

[She does realize that her secret has been read plenty of times over, right? Well, whatever she feels like doing. Rideaux doesn't really care one way or the other.]

But, yes. A little bit of both, though ultimately it is for the good of the dimension that I hail from.

[She nods in understanding.]

Might I hear how this gift works, or is that information you cannot disclose?

[He's really not sure if he would consider that generous. But if Adelina wants to take it as such...]

The gist of it is that by activating it, we can open a rift to traverse dimensions. Its activation also makes us physically stronger and faster, partially in order to deal with our missions.

[There's more to it, but...yeah, definitely not disclosing too much more if he doesn't have to.]

[She pauses, surprised and almost eager, before she realizes something.]

I imagine it is not an ability that functions correctly in this place, then?

[Or returning home would be much simpler for all of them.]
