Week 8.

WEEK 8 Regardless of what you think of the most recent deaths, four more people have died this week. Milla Maxwell, Angel, Susan Ashworth, and Aligula are gone now, leaving you with about a quarter of your original number. Thirty-five down to twelve - this can't keep going for much longer, can it? Is there anything you can do? Saturday is given to regrouping and sleep; come Sunday morning, the clock chimes the hour at seven o'clock and there are no dead bodies to be found, so it can be assumed that all of you are safe for the time being. That said, you'll be feeling a little groggy when you wake up; it seems you've regained something that you didn't realize you'd lost... Unlike the previous weeks, however, it seems that either you've reached the end of the line or Jericho has decided to stop rewarding you for your effort; where there would usually be a stairwell to a new floor, you're met with nothing but solid wall. Perhaps it's distressing; perhaps it's a good sign. Only time will tell, and time isn't something you have a lot of around here. PARTICIPANTS REMAINING: 12

[Maybe this is their last week, and surviving this long means they get to leave.]

I hope so. That would be an incredible relief, honestly...

[A small pause.]

Depending on what the end entails, I suppose.

Hopefully a 'congratulations, you're free to go' and nothing else.

[bloodbiter]

I doubt they would offer congratulations. It seems a bit too kind for them.

[notaccurate]

Their 'congratulations' would not be out of kindness, of course, but rather to rub our survival in our faces.

[bloodbiter]

[A nod.]

They would be mocking us if they offered it at all. [...] If I have any choice in the matter, I’m not leaving them alive when I depart.

Mmm, it is a nice thought. Though I am sure at least a few people here would say to spare them.

[bloodbiter]

...I imagine so, yes. It's a bit regrettable that some might feel that way, given the circumstances.

I suppose if we get some kind of 'motive monologue' then they might become more of a tragic villain that can be sympathized with.

Which means we probably shouldn't let them talk.

[bloodbiter]

...I cannot understand anyone who would sympathize with the people who put us in a situation that caused such tragedy to unfold.

[A sigh.]

Perhaps part of me wishes that I was forgiving enough to try to understand whatever reasoning they have, but I know I never will.

[notaccurate]

I think, under certain circumstances, I might. But they would have to be very specific circumstances.

[Ones that Luca is sure will not be met.]

[bloodbiter]

[She's about to reply, but his wording has her curious, and she amends her statement.]

What circumstances would those be?

If they were being coerced in a particularly heinous way, say a relative of theirs was being held hostage or something. That I could understand. Jericho in particular could be that, seeing as how he is at odds with Hilda.

But that could still be untrue in this situation.

[bloodbiter]

[She thinks that over, and then shakes her head.]

All of us were coerced in such a way, with a loved one being in peril, yet many of us refused to kill one of our number. Forcing over thirty people to involve themselves in a sadistic exercise like this for that reason... It still would be far from justified,

Understanding why someone did something and finding their actions justifiable are two very different things. Even if I could sympathize with Jericho and Hilda, that would not absolve them of the crimes they have committed. It just means that their penance could be paid in other ways than with their lives.

[bloodbiter]

[She thinks for a moment, but then:]

I'm not certain I agree with that distinction. After all - if we understood their reasoning, but it was extremely poor reasoning that would lead to more people being hurt in the future... That wouldn't change what they deserved.

[notaccurate]

[He pauses as he considers that.]

We could always break their hands for punishment. It would be hard to run anything without functioning hands.

[bloodbiter]

[She pauses, surprised, but then it gets a laugh from her just from how unexpected it is.]

It certainly wouldn't be the retribution they would expect. I'd like to see the looks on their faces as we did.

Oh yes, that would be worth it too. Anything to see some kind of emotional reaction.
