Week 8.

WEEK 8 Regardless of what you think of the most recent deaths, four more people have died this week. Milla Maxwell, Angel, Susan Ashworth, and Aligula are gone now, leaving you with about a quarter of your original number. Thirty-five down to twelve - this can't keep going for much longer, can it? Is there anything you can do? Saturday is given to regrouping and sleep; come Sunday morning, the clock chimes the hour at seven o'clock and there are no dead bodies to be found, so it can be assumed that all of you are safe for the time being. That said, you'll be feeling a little groggy when you wake up; it seems you've regained something that you didn't realize you'd lost... Unlike the previous weeks, however, it seems that either you've reached the end of the line or Jericho has decided to stop rewarding you for your effort; where there would usually be a stairwell to a new floor, you're met with nothing but solid wall. Perhaps it's distressing; perhaps it's a good sign. Only time will tell, and time isn't something you have a lot of around here. PARTICIPANTS REMAINING: 12

Okay, okay, well, why don't you explain this for a layman?

[ She considers a little moment here, and she... okay, so it's like Rin's magic, she guesses. ]

[For a moment Luca almost ends up doing it really condescendingly with baby-talk, but he stops himself short of doing that. No, Elda's actually a good person and a friend, she deserves better than his salty attitude.]

The easiest way to explain it is 'if you can imagine it, you can make it real'. But there are rules to making things real, and those rules make most things very difficult to do. Basic physical and chemical reactions, like starting a fire or turning water to ice, are much easier to do than things like controlling people.

And when you try to do this, there is an area around your body where you can actually do magic. Think of it as like...a boundary to the magic. It's generally a sphere shape centered around you, hence why it's called 'Sfeer Theory'.

The science part is in knowing what materials to supply and what circles to draw to get the reaction you want. Of course, those with a stronger willpower do not need to draw a circle at all, as they can 'draw' it with their mind.

[ Okay, circles, like that alchemy stuff? she nods with a smile, leaning forward. ]

That would make you strong, would it not? Unless you got to draw on the man's arm.

So that's what's up with the secret?

[ Jerking the thumb over her shoulder at those. ]

Yes, that is 'what's up' with that secret. Officially, I have no license.

Unofficially, I excel at a very specific kind of Sfeer Theory, one that most people don't try to learn. Outside of that I am nothing special, I can manage to make fire or gusts of wind. But in certain situations, that changes.

You know, just in case this comes up at a trial or something when you snap, any chance you want to admit to being a terrorist or something now?

[ She's saying this with good (if dark) humor ]

Oh, trust me, if I ever did snap I wouldn't kill everyone.

I would just use my Sfeer to make everyone vote for the wrong person and win that way.

The way I see it, the way to victory depends mostly on who you kill, if you're doing it that way. There's... maybe three key people left. Actually, possibly less.

[ Still, that - ]

Not like you have those powers here. If they thought mine were unbalanced, no way they'd let you have those.

Exactly. I have stopped trying to use them at this point. A shame, really, because it would be so much faster to clean things up around here with them.

[...yeah he's a loser who wants his powers back for more practical reasons than murder.]

Besides, many of those remaining have a stronger will than me. I wouldn't be able to force them to do anything.

Oh, certainly! I'd snap you neck before you moved one of my fingers!

[ ... reassuring???? ]

...yes, thank you, Elda. At least I know you will stop me if I ever start down the path towards villainy.

[ She said without a hint of irony. ]

But now I need a counter-measure in case you are the one to 'snap', as you so elegantly put it.

Oh, do go on then. I'm curious to see what you figure would work.

If necessary, we could stand on top of the cabinets.

[ She taps a finger on the table, grinning. ]

[Oh so she wants a real answer, not something cheeky.]

Probably we would have to overpower you, by having several people grab you at once.

[matchbreaker]

At least four of you would die like that, you know.

[ She laughs at it, leaning back on her chair. ] Well, maybe. That Rin girl's strong.

[notaccurate]

Oh come now, I thought you were fond of most of the people here.

[The ones still alive, that is.]

Would you really hurt them?

[matchbreaker]

I am, but I have another awareness here, you know. That action taken to end the exercise... that kills everyone. It doesn't matter how dies earlier or who dies later. It's all or nothing.

[notaccurate]

You would just get caught, so I doubt you would plan out a murder. A crime of emotion I could see happening, but in that case the one to try to subdue you would probably be the one person I cannot picture you harming at all.

[Even at her most emotional, Elda still didn't hurt Sayaka. And Sayaka is absolutely the one who would throw herself at Elda first to try to stop her.]

[matchbreaker]

[ It's just like her to wear her weaknesses on her sleeve, isn't it? Elda's eyes turn catlike, but she nods a little. She... ]

The only people I'll never harm are my family.
