Week 8.

WEEK 8 Regardless of what you think of the most recent deaths, four more people have died this week. Milla Maxwell, Angel, Susan Ashworth, and Aligula are gone now, leaving you with about a quarter of your original number. Thirty-five down to twelve - this can't keep going for much longer, can it? Is there anything you can do? Saturday is given to regrouping and sleep; come Sunday morning, the clock chimes the hour at seven o'clock and there are no dead bodies to be found, so it can be assumed that all of you are safe for the time being. That said, you'll be feeling a little groggy when you wake up; it seems you've regained something that you didn't realize you'd lost... Unlike the previous weeks, however, it seems that either you've reached the end of the line or Jericho has decided to stop rewarding you for your effort; where there would usually be a stairwell to a new floor, you're met with nothing but solid wall. Perhaps it's distressing; perhaps it's a good sign. Only time will tell, and time isn't something you have a lot of around here. PARTICIPANTS REMAINING: 12

[Rin's been scarce since Tuesday. Ever since the incentive was announced, she's mostly kept to her room, the kitchen and dining area, and strangely enough the sewing room, which is where she can also be spotted until around lunch time on Thursday. She's working on...

Is that a stuffed animal? It looks like some sort of cute mouse thing. Seems she's putting the finishing touches on it. She takes her lunch in this room, too. They're fancy little finger sandwiches. She's nomming on them with some tea, and would probably look quite fancy if she wasn't surrounded in batting fluff. It looks like there's a cloud swarming by her ankles here.

Eventually the bulk of that project is finished, and Rin feels somewhat satisfied. There's a little more hand-stitching to be done as a special touch, but she can do that in her room. ...She doesn't really feel like going back there now, and it's this thought which sees her going up to the sixth floor.

Thusly on Thursday evening, you can find Rin in the chapel, of all places. Sitting to the far side of one pew in the middle of the room, her head isn't bowed in prayer, however. Feet drawn up onto the bench with her and hugging her knees close to her chest, she's staring contemplatively at the back of the pew in front of hers, thoughts far away. Churches are a common refuge for those who need space to think. Those who use them are known for doing so quietly, but Rin isn't such a person. Once or twice, she can be heard muttering to herself.]

...There's no way we lost. [Color bleeds back into her fingers, as she forces them to relax.] No way.

[ The chapel isn't somewhere Yuri comes often - he doesn't really find much of an interest in it, but he does make a pass by it and he decides to peek in to see if anyone's currently within. He finds Rin in that position of hers, and he decides to draw nearer. ]

Hey, Rin. Something bothering you?

[heritrix]

[It takes a moment, to process someone's speaking to her. Rin lifts her head, tilting it in the general direction of where Yuri's voice came from, but doesn't turn to face him head on.]

It's Thursday. Everyone should be bothered.

[hesperos]

Yeah, I know that.

[ He shrugs. ]

I kind of was wondering if you were bothered by something non-Thursday related.

[heritrix]

No, they're connected. [She shrugs her shoulders.] It's the motive. This is the first one in a while that I've had to take seriously.

[hesperos]

The one that Jericho is so full of crap about?

[ ..... ]

... No, I get it. It can sound kind of compelling and it's not easy to brush off like most of them had been.

[heritrix]

[So full of crap about... It's amazing how that both relieves Rin and makes her feel more tense at the same time. All she can think about is a conversation she had with Archer—her Archer—some time ago. So much has happened since then, not just here but in her memories that it feels ancient now.]

I want to live a life without regrets... Someone once told me that I'm the kind of person who will never regret anything, so long as I do what I think is right, but whatever I choose... I'm not sure I can do that anymore.

[hesperos]

[ Yuri's eyebrows are furrowing, for a moment anyway. He'll look from her and then to the side, considering what she's said. ]

You're saying you don't know if you can do that? Because of what's supposedly at risk with this motive?

[ ... If that's true, then - ]

Sometimes even when you do the right thing, you're gonna regret it. It doesn't mean it's a bad thing either. It's just something that naturally happens, but even if that's the case, it shouldn't stop you from moving forward. We both know giving into that bastard isn't an option, even if it's a strong temptation.

That said, I don't really see you as the type of person to allow your regrets to hold them back. Am I wrong about that?

[heritrix]

[A lot of the things he's saying to her are lessons that have already been engraved in her soul. A mage walks with death. They live by the consequences of their actions, good or bad. Rin has always strived not to dwell on those things, but to accept them whole. Learn from them, and move on with her life.

She's a resilient girl. There's been so many hardships in her life that she's learned to bounce back quickly.]

No. [This is said firmly.] You're not. I already made my decision, before you even walked in here.

[And usually that would be it, but this time it's not that easy. She can't come to grips with it yet, and she kind of hates herself for that right now.]

[hesperos]

...But even though you have made that decision, you still don't like it and that's the thing bothering you.

[ Yuri has purposefully written off the motive as Jericho being full of shit. He has good reason to disbelieve it and even for the part of him that thought of it as plausible, he had faith in himself and his friends that, according to memory, it'd be resolved.

It's not the same for everyone, however. ]

Do you have people back home who'd be able to handle the world being in trouble?

[heritrix]

Not in time.

[It's a response that should answer Yuri's question more clearly. More so, when she elaborates.]

In my dream on Sunday, where the memory ended... Saber, Shirou, and I were about to face our toughest battle yet, before the sun even rose. Do you remember that strange dark energy in place of Kirei's heart? [She's sure he does, so she continues without waiting for Yuri's response.] If I understood my memory correctly, I know what it is now.

That Golden Servant is going to use it. He intends to wipe out all humans, and his weapon is powerful enough that he could actually succeed if he's not stopped. It would be a disaster. Genocide.

[...Looking down at the toes of her boots, she scoffs.] I'm playing the deadliest game of chicken here. My world really is in jeopardy, and I'm banking everything on knowing for certain I don't have all my memories back yet, and that we won.

[And she can say that with confidence, for now. But it doesn't change the fact she doesn't know for sure, or how real the risk feels to her. Unlike Yuri, she can't say for certain that Jericho is full of shit, because her own memories prove he could be right. The threat is very real for her.]

[hesperos]

[ Ah, yes. Genocide.

The motivations are probably different and everything, but that is exactly the same danger Yuri's world is facing (thanks Duke) on top of his world actually in danger of possibly ending because of the Adephagos. But, he and his friends had found a solution so he had faith in himself and all of them that it worked out. ]

... I can understand that. I guess that's just another reason to be pissed at the big guy up there. He's taking advantage of people whose worlds really are in deep trouble, besides the fact someone's gotta act anyway.

[ He puts his hands behind his head. ]

[heritrix]

[Rin snorts, and it sounds something between an ugh and a laugh.]

Please don't call hm the "big guy up there". Jericho has enough of a god complex.

[hesperos]

You know what they say. The bigger they are, the harder they fall.

[ Yuri was totally not waiting to use that saying here for Jericho here, nope. ]

[heritrix]

I still feel like that's giving him too much credit. I like to picture him as a tiny man, liable to be squished.

[hesperos]

Huh, in that case I'd imagine him as something even smaller. Like an ant.

[ This is not the most petty thing ever. ]

[heritrix]

Not satisfying enough. I want to hear the crunch.

[hesperos]

[ He snorts. ]

What about a cockroach, then?

[heritrix]

Heh. Now that one is fitting. He does sound like the kind of person who would crawl out of a toilet bowl.

[...]

Do you think he could be right, though, about what we have in common? I was too worked up to go to the meeting on Tuesday, but I thought about asking if anyone else remembers something like that.

[hesperos]

For all the crap he's been spewing about being able to save worlds from going to hell, I think he was right about the current state of some people's worlds.

[ Yuri gives a bit of small pause. ]

My world's in a similar state too, so that's why I'm even considering that it might be something a lot of us or a few of us can have in common.

[ He is not exactly sure all of them would have such a thing in common but Yuri considers that it might be because he doesn't want to subscribe to the bastard being right about anything out of spite, and so. Yeah. ]
