[About an hour after the trial and subsequent execution, Cabanela makes a decision.

They need to do something, keep the morale up, however little it may be.

Under each occupied room door people will find the following note written:


In difficult times such as this, it is important to carry on.
Don't give into despair; we must preservere.
If you don't want to be alone this evening, meet me in the dining hall.

[Upon entering the dinning hall, you will find Cabanela sitting at one of the tables; he has lit two candles that are placed at the center of the table, but there's nothing else to note.

You'll have to supply your own food, since he doesn't have much of an appetite.]

[Of course Morty was gonna go to the after-party. Much like everyone else, he can't really deal with his thoughts on his own and honestly, he just preferred being around other people anyway. He'd just go hang with his grandpa but he was still peeved at the old man, so he was very thankful for the invite.

He enters the dining hall and immediately sets to... something. He looks pretty determined, anyway, when he approaches basically every character present to ask a question.]

Hey, did you.. do you know who has Ken's book? Th-the one he was reading last night?

[Oh. Hibiki is a little surprised that the kid is coming up to her, and at first she's not sure how to react. She isn't really a fan of his grandpa, but she's the one who found and took his book during the investigation. She had it with her at the trial, too, but.]

That's me. I was holdin' onto it just in case it was...[evidence]...important. The Black Goat's Egg, right?

Yeah, that's the one! [He smiles, feeling a little relieved. He thought maybe it was lost or chucked or who even knows.]

Um.. c-can I have it? You don't need it anymore, right?

[On one hand, she wanted to read it because there's noting else to do sometimes. On the other? She knows she'd never finish it. She starts getting up from her seat.]

Are you gonna read it? I can go get it for ya, it's back in my room.

[With. Two bottles of arsenic. Ugh, she needs to get rid of those. But the book she can handle.]

Uh, it's in Japanese so I kind of can't... but, before he di--

I-I mean, a couple of days ago, Ken talked to me about wanting to start like... our own library, since the machine gives out books apparently? So I thought we could start with his. [He's not even sure where he'd make the library though.. maybe the ballroom? The foyer? Who knows.]

That'd be a problem, huh?

[It'd be like asking her to read an English book, she imagines. Ah, well, she can't say no to an answer like that.]

I like that idea a lot! Kinda like the Kaneki Ken Library, huh? [Like named after a famous dead person, except. Murder.] I can't think of anyone else I'd rather give it to.

Yeah, exactly! It can be like a memorial.. like the Lincoln Statue but probably not as big or.. presidential. [EITHER WAY, it's gonna be a thing.]

A-anyway, thanks. Do you wanna help me set it up? I-I have no idea where to even get started, honestly.

No, but, like, I can tell you I didn't steal it.

Did you steal something else or something?

I stole all his stuff from his room, so like. It wasn't there or whatever?

[She's trying to be helpful ok.]

...why did you steal his stuff? I-isn't that like.. graverobbing? [She's trying but she's only succeeding in having him judge her a little.]

I would have, like, stolen it if he was alive too. [She only has stealing to entertain her here.] But now it's, like, he's gone but I have his stuff so whatever.

A... book? [Rakka's head tilted a bit in confusion. She recognized Morty a bit by his profile, and knew that his grandfather was here. But they hadn't talked much since, well, the trial today.]

I-I'm sorry, but I don't know what book that might be. I didn't know Kaneki too well.

That's okay! I-I mean, we only had like.. l-less than a week to get to know him anyway. [And that's the sad reality of their lives now. In less than a week, two people were already dead.]

....Don't you think it's felt like a week? [Kind of an odd thing to point out, but it's just occurring to Rakka.] We don't know how long it's been, since we can't look outside. And all we have is that clock in the foyer.

[housenurse]

Oh, I bet whoever investigated his room has that! You should keep asking around.

... You're Morty-kun, right? [the child with the unfortunate relation...]

[He plans to ask around, don't you worry!]

O-oh uh, yeah. That's - that's me. [It's weird how there's still people he hasn't met yet, despite being here with them for a week.]

A-and you're...? [Unfortunately, he hardly remembers any of the information from the profiles.. hopefully he doesn't seem rude for not already knowing her name.]

Sukuyo Mankanshoku...! I'm actually a little glad you don't know who I am yet. [bc she noticed] It's weird being introduced by a profile, isn't it?

Y-yeah, it's really weird. [He offers a small smile at that, feeling a little more relaxed with her comment.]

It's like you haven't talked to them yet but you already know everything about them... it really makes me feel - I dunno.. like talking to each other has no point?

Oh, I think they make actually talking even more important! After all, the profiles give very narrow views of everybody; you'll never know a person's true soul until you talk to them face to face!

[y'know like how the profiles make Logan sound like a dick when everybody knows he's clearly a Nice King.]

Pretty sure Hibiki had it. You lookin' to read it?

[ She had played with the idea herself, though it wasn't her speed ]

Nah, I-I can't read Japanese.. I was more looking to start a library with it? 'Cause me and Ken were talking about starting one a couple of days ago so.. y'know... [Thought it'd be nice to make one in his honor..]

If y'want, I can read anything in Japanese to ya...

[ It's not totally her thing, the books Kaneki read, but she doesn't mind reading them, really. ]

I'd offer to teach you, but that might take a while. Well, it's not like I mind doin' it, it's just a little more complex than English?

Well I mean I wouldn't mind learning it, for sure! [He smiles, kind of excited at the idea of it.]

I-it's not like we've got anywhere to go right now anyway, right? Got - got plenty of time to spend, h-haha...

Well, then - we can meet up in like, the mornings or evenings or whatever works for you? It's not like I really have any standing plans...

[ UNFORTUNATELY...there's not a whole to do here for her. Libraries are all well and good and shit, but Sol honestly prefers a more active lifestyle than she can live cooped up in here. ]

I'll let you know if I get any books from the machine. [ Which she does, by Monday. ]
